Sidney Wilson Gets Real: Overcoming Body Image Struggles & Shutting Down the Haters
Atlanta Wild’s Sidney Wilson opens up about her journey with body image struggles growing up, how she overcame them, and what she really thinks about internet critics.
From self-doubt to strength specialist, Sidney’s story is one of resilience, confidence, and proving that hard work speaks louder than words.
In a candid interview, Grid League athlete Sidney Wilson shared her journey from battling body image issues to embracing strength through fitness and competition. Growing up, Wilson played softball but stopped sports after high school, leading to weight gain and a period of low self-esteem. She recalls the turning point when she saw strong, muscular women in CrossFit and bodybuilding, shifting her view on what her body could achieve.
Wilson’s early experiences at the gym inspired her to improve, looking up to CrossFit icons and bodybuilders. She encountered criticism about her muscular physique but learned to dismiss the negativity, fully embracing her strength and newfound confidence. Now a key competitor in the Grid League, Wilson thrives on the team-oriented, fast-paced environment, recently switching to the Wild, a team based in metro Atlanta. The team culture promotes resilience, and her teammates, who playfully call her “Bud Heavy,” support one another like family through every challenge.
Reflecting on her past, Wilson encourages young girls with low self-esteem to embrace their strength and individuality. Competing in Grid League is her way of showing that women can be both strong and feminine. She’s eagerly looking forward to future matches, particularly a head-to-head matchup against her idol, Taylar Stallings.
